5 Interesting Facts about Tequila That You Should Know About
Most millennials desire to taste tequila before they learn anything about it. But once you start having tequila shots now and then, it makes sense to learn more about it. After all, only a knowledgeable person knows how to savor a drink up to its maximum. There is so much to know about this worldwide popular drink. No matter if you are a Toro Dorado Agave Tequila lover, Dos Alas Tequila Aficionado, or an admirer of other tequila brands, there are a few things about Tequila that you will find amusing and interesting.   Fact 1: Tequila is a place. The majority of the population across the globe knows that tequila is a drink. And a significant number of people have tasted it and developed an immense sense of liking towards it. However, only a few people are aware of the fact that tequila is named so by its place of origin “Tequila”. The full name is Santiago de Tequila. It is a Mexican town and municipality in Jalisco state. While most tequila is produced in the state of Jalisco, it can also be produced in four additional states, namely, Guanajuato, Michoacán, Nayarit, and Tamaulipas.   Fact 2: Tequila can be made only from Weber Blue Agave. While champagne can be made from pinot noir, pinot meunier, chardonnay, pinot blanc, pinot gris, petit meslier, and arbane, tequila can only be produced from agave tequilana weber azul.   Tequila drink was given its name by either a botanist – Frederic Albert Constantin Weber, or Franz Weber who was the botanist’s assistant. One thing that is sure about this drink is that it was this German botanist who selected blue agave for tequila production.   Why did he deem this plant perfect for tequila production?  It has perfect sugar content and a six- to ten-year lifecycle (a lot shorter than other agaves – some of them can take up to 30 years to reach maturity).   Fact 3: Tequila is a drink of the people, not just rich people. Though you can easily find really expensive tequila brands out there in the market, you might find it surprising that tequila first started as a commoner’s hooch; meaning, it is a drink of the people, regardless of their class and budget. Long before the heavy commercialization of tequila, villages had their own little distillery operation (palenque).   Fact 4: Pulque is a necessary step to make tequila. To make tequila, producers always first make pulque. Pulque is nearly as alcoholic as beer and made from lightly fermented sap of the agave – the same plant that you are hearing about right from the beginning. Once you acquire its taste, its flavor feels zingy and addictive. Though its color is opaque milky, it feels fizzy and bright when your tongue tastes it.   Fact 5: There are five categories of tequila: blanco, reposado, añejo, and extra añejo. Over years, many people come to know about this fact either by noticing the label on the tequila bottle or by reading it on some article, blog, or website. Otherwise, a lot of people remain unaware of this fact.   Extra Añejo is aged for three years or more, Añejo is aged for one to three years, Reposado is aged for two months to one year, and Blanco is not aged at all or if it is aged, it is not aged more than two months.   We hope you enjoy these five interesting five facts about tequila.
