If you are a regular tequila drinker, there are a few basic facts that you should know about the spirit. First, there are three main varieties: Blanco (unaged), Reposado (aged at least two months in oak barrel), and Añejo (aged from one to three years in oak barrel). Second, there are two primary categories every tequila falls into Mixto (blended) or 100% agave.
The Mixto is the type which is usually found in a college fest or local bars, as it is cheaper than 100% agave. Keep in mind the Mixto can leave you with a nasty pile of regret in the morning. If you want the best tasting Tequila for yourself or party, consider 100% agave tequila. The tequila is 100% blue agave because it is made with only the juice of blue agaves and nothing else is mixed.
Let’s take a look at the reasons why you should choose 100% when purchasing a tequila.
- No Hidden Elements
As said earlier, 100% agave tequila is pure agave and nothing else. The process used to make a tequila starts with the blue agave, cousin of an aloe plant, and by law, it is grown only in the state of Jalisco or a few other Mexican municipalities. The sharp leaves of the plant are cut, leaving the heart of the plant (pina) behind. These pinas are heated and pressed, and the resulting juice is distilled into tequila.
On the other hand, Mixto contains up to 49% non-agave ingredients. These generally consist of sugar cane or other distillable products but can include additives, such as colorings or flavorings. What's worse is that it is not mandatory for mixto producers to disclose what they use. So, you never know what exactly is in your mixto bottle.
- No After-effects
When you drink a mixto tequila, you are mixing your drinks from the very first sip. With only 51% agave, this type of tequila has other ingredients, including many distillates.
But when you choose 100% agave, you will get the best flavor and taste of the spirit. When you drink the two simultaneously, you will be able to notice the difference.
- Better Taste
Today, each brand has its distinctive flavor profile that gives a wide range of great tasting tequila. Although the agave species used have to be the Blue Weber, several factors can affect its flavor in many different ways.
Whether you like fruity, spicy, or earthy, there is a 100% agave tequila available for you. If you are a person who loves to know what they are drinking, always choose 100% agave over mixto tequila.
